We are looking for motivated individuals with strong skills in analytics, statistics, and machine learning to join the Marketplace Optimization Data Science team in support of Uber’s mapping technology groups. Members of our team work closely with product and engineering staff to understand the unique business problems posed by geospatial data and services. We then apply advanced algorithms to a wealth of data generated from product usage, enabling insights that improve these mission-critical components of Uber’s systems.


A Few Projects That Our Team Takes On Are

  • Discovering business insights and behavioral patterns in the usage of spatial exploration services. Defining metrics, setting experimentation protocol, and going beyond the basics to identify the circumstances in which certain strategies succeed.
  • Working closely with city teams and our operational counterparts to identify the areas where maps can make the biggest difference in the markets where we have the greatest growth potential. Work with engineers across the maps stack to ensure the problems our riders and drivers face are addressed with the most comprehensive, systematic solutions.
  • Apply state-of-the-art statistical models to produce ever more accurate estimations of travel time and distance, powering Uber's business.


The qualified candidate will hold an advanced quantitative degree (Ph.D. preferred), and must be comfortable applying research methodologies to abstract business and engineering problems with extreme precision. They must also have the enthusiasm and initiative necessary to deliver answers to those problems at Uber’s breakneck pace. The candidate is also expected to have demonstrable programming skills and be comfortable adhering to engineering development processes.



  • Work alongside engineering teams to enable new algorithmic designs for large-scale geospatial data processing.
  • Embed with engineering and partner closely with operations, business, and infrastructure groups.
  • Provide analysis using mathematical modeling tools to improve business processes and decisions.
  • Define creative solutions to business problems using advanced mathematical algorithms
  • Work independently, as well as in collaboration with other data scientists.
  • Communicate with senior management and cross-functional teams.
  • Build and validate prototypes to demonstrate the benefits from proposed changes to decision systems and operational processes.


Minimum Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or other quantitative discipline, or B.S. with 5 or more years of experience.
  • Knowledge of underlying mathematical foundations of one or more of the following areas: statistics, probability, machine learning, and optimization.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a small group.
  • Experience driving research and development.
  • Experience communicating with both technical and business people. Ability to speak at a level appropriate for the audience.
  • Ability to develop ML or statistical analysis software in R or python
  • Experience with other object-oriented programming languages (e.g. java, C++, C#) a plus.
  • Experience with reporting-based software (e.g. Shiny, D3.js) a plus.
