Job Overview

The Video and Display Advertising Unit is responsible for delivering market-leading advertising and audience analytics technologies, platforms, solutions, and services for video and display advertising. Our advertising products deliver billions of ad impressions to hundreds of millions of users everyday, enabling hundreds of thousands of advertisers to effectively connect with the right audience at the right time across devices and across the globe. Our audience analytics products analyze multi-terabytes of data everyday and deliver insight on the preference, intent, interest, and behavior of users to help Yahoo and its customers drive user growth, engagement and value.

We are seeking research engineers to mine the massive amount of data at Yahoo and apply innovative statistics and machine learning algorithms to develop advertising tools and solutions that will automate and optimize critical decisions in the end-to-end online advertising process and help publishers as well as advertisers achieve their respective business objectives. They will be working on a variety of online advertising problems such advertising trust and safety, bidding strategy optimization and response modeling, and develop and operationalize analytic solutions that have immediate business impact.

The successful candidates will be those who are curious, quick learners, self-motivated, and creative thinkers. They will be proven hands-on problem solvers and really enjoy applying the state-of-art algorithms to massive amount of data to search for useful patterns and relationships. They will have broad knowledge about statistics, machine learning, optimization theory, user behavior profiling, experimental design, and etc. More importantly they will be excellent practitioners of these knowledge, and get enormous satisfaction from implementing their solutions in production and seeing them make a real difference to the business everyday.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with business partners to identify strategic opportunities for applying innovative algorithms to help advertisers to optimize the ROI of their advertising campaigns, allow publishers to maximize monetization and engagement of their users, and enable all participants in the marketplace to operate efficiently
  • Analyze petabyte size data to identify useful relations, patterns, and features that are predictive of user behaviors, preferences, intents, interests, brand affiliation, and etc. Continuously identify and explore new and unconventional data sources
  • Apply advanced statistical, machine learning, and other types of analytical techniques to audience analytics to improve inventory forecasting, audience segmentation, and audience extension
  • Design, develop, and implement statistical and machine learning models to predict competitive bidding landscape, click through rate, conversion/action rate, ad relevance to user, supply and demand risk, and etc
  • Abstract the objectives and constraints of critical business decisions for advertisers and publishers, and formulate them in the form of mathematical optimization problems. Develop advanced self-learning algorithms and experiment design methodologies to solve them.
  • Develop innovative techniques to collect performance data and measure the impact of online advertising. Design effective experiments to continuously explore the efficiency frontier of advertising performance
  • Work with engineering and operations teams to build systems and operational capabilities for implementing models and algorithms, and monitoring and evaluating their health and effectiveness in production.
  • Support product and sales teams in taking new advertising products and offerings to the market by demonstrating their superior algorithmic capabilities and business performances through case studies, POCs, and etc
  • Partner with research engineers and scientists in Yahoo! Labs to advance scientific knowledge about online advertising. Stay abreast of industry best practices and academic research trends

Requirements

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Ph.D in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics, Quantitative Marketing, or a related quantitative field
  • Experience in predictive modeling, data mining, machine learning, experimental design, statistical inference, econometrics, and etc
  • Proficient programming skills in at least one of the following languages: Java, Python, SQL, C/C++, SAS, and R
  • Excel in abstract and statistical thinking while deeply grounded in solid business judgment
  • Skilled in interpersonal communication and relationship. Ability to explain complex analytical concepts to non-experts
  • Work well both independently and with others in a team
  • Proficiency with big data technology such as Hadoop, Pig, Hive, NoSQL

     

Preferable Job Qualifications

  • Theoretic knowledge of and practical experience with large scale text mining, graph data mining, and social network analysis
